The "Iron Ball", sometimes called "Iron Fish" or "Lucky Iron Fish" is a cast-iron ingot, often formed in the shape of a fish, that you add to your kettle or pot while cooking to increase your iron intake.
Adding iron ingots to boiling water naturally supplements the water with elemental iron. If you drink or cook with this water, your iron intake will increase. These tools have been instrumental in lowering iron deficiency and anemia on a large scale in many countries.
This particular iron ball has been cast into a Hello Kitty shape, by the expert craftsmen at Ikenaga Iron Works in Japan.
As it is made only from natural iron, it won't interfere with the flavor of your food or water. If it starts to rust, simply brush it with a scrubber to clean. It is recommended that you boil the iron ball in water for only 5-10 minutes to maximize the amount of iron leached into the water.
