This seasoned snack is thickly shaven, half-dried flakes of bonito. They're not paper-think and completely dry like typical katsuobushi, they're more similar to the texture cured meats like prosciutto.
The flakes are semi-dried, and then seasoned lightly with soy sauce, to give a smoky, salty, umami flavor that goes perfectly with cheese and wine. It comes in an easy-open resealable bag, so you don't have to finish the whole bag at once. It's only very lightly seasoned, to preserve the natural flavor.

I bought a bag of this on my recent visit to Japan and opened it shortly after my return. It was way better than I ever thought it would be. It is soft, not dry and the more you chew it, the mire flavor you get. Yes it is fishy but less so than canned tuna. The fish is smoked so you get a little taste of that but definitely of the sea. I had to buy more quickly but another trip to Japan was not immediately in the cards but I was lucky enough to find it here. Very highly recommended!
