Yokan, a traditional Japanese wagashi sweet made of sweetened red bean paste and agar, has been enjoyed in Japan for hundreds of years.
Nowadays, many variations of the yokan are available, like this rich and tasty black sesame and kokuto brown sugar variety.
Rather than using only sweetened red bean paste as you would with a traditional yokan, Manten opted for a blend of white and red bean pastes, so as not to interfere with the other flavors at play, namely flavorful ground sesame paste and Japanese kokuto brown sugar.
The natural, gentle sweetness of the kokuto really enhances the rich, toasty flavor and aroma of the sesame, resulting in an elegant yokan like nothing else.
This modern take on a traditional Japanese wagashi sweet goes exceptionally well with green tea, but is also good with coffee, or just by itself.
