This Jizo tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dog figurine, combines the traditional lucky tanuki with the peaceful form of a Jizo monk. Made in the traditional Shigaraki pottery style, it serves as both a decorative ornament and a functional piggy bank. He holds a Buddhist staff in his right hand and a sacred wish-granting jewel in his left hand. Unlike traditional tanuki, which carry a sake flask and account book, this design features sacred Buddhist objects associated with protection, peace, prosperity, good fortune, and the fulfillment of wishes.
This Shigaraki tanuki is handmade in Shigaraki, a historic pottery region in Shiga Prefecture.
